Swim & Chlorine Damage

One of the best things about summer is spending hot summer days in a swimming pool.  Unfortunately, all that chlorine is hard on hair.  Chlorine is attracted to children’s fine hair.  Chlorine buildup can make hair tangled, dry, brittle, sticky, shiny, and even make it green!

Parents can do a few simple things to avoid these issues and save time and energy from having to comb through snarled, dry hair or trying to repair or cut chlorine-damaged hair.

Prevention:

Soak your hair in the sink or shower before getting into the pool.  If your hair has already absorbed lots of non-chlorinated water, there will be little room left in the hair shaft for the harsh stuff (chlorine).  Also using a pre-swim conditioner will act like a protective coating over the hair shaft.

Immediately after swimming, use a clarifying shampoo which will gently cleanse and protect swimmers’ hair and can actually remove chlorine.  Pairing the clarifying shampoo with a condition is important because the shampoo strips hair of impurities while the conditioner will add moisture back in.  At DooLittlez we carry a variety of effective clarifying shampoos and conditioners.
